On June 21st 2011 Zagreb was host to the 1st ordinary Meeting of the European Forestry Institute's Council (EFI Council) during Croatian chairmanship

Since 2011, the Republic of Croatia, as a member state of the European Forest Institute (EFI), took over the Chairmanship of the EFI Council in a three-year period (2011-2014). During the Croatian chairmanship, dr. sc. Hrvoje Meštrić, the Director of the Directorate for Science, will chair the EFI Council, while dr. sc. Dijana Vuletić, the Director of the Croatian Forest Institute, has been appointed Vice-Chairman.

With 120 Associate Members, 5 regional offices and one project centre, EFI acts as the leading international organisation in forest research and addresses policy-relevant needs related to forests and their governance. Until spring 2011, a total of 23 European countries, including Croatia, ratified the Convention of the European Forest Institute.

On 21 June, the first regular meeting of the EFI Council during Croatian chairmanship was held in Zagreb. Representatives of responsible ministries and forest institutes of 14 Member States participated. The objective of the meeting was to present and agree on future research activities and future development of the Institute. Further, Board members for the period 2011-2014 were elected: dr. sc. José Antonio Bonet (Spain – re-election), dr. sc. Harald Mauser (Austria – re-election), prof. dr. sc. Giuseppe Scarascia-Mugnozza (Italy – election) and Lisa Sennerby Forsse (Sweden – election).

Croatian membership in EFI and chairmanship during this period are seen as an important opportunity for the further strengthening of Croatian recognisability in the field of forest research at the international level.
