MEDFOREX was a regional project centre of the European Forest Institute (EFI) that ran from 2004 to 2008. The project centre was a continuation of the MEDFOREX initiative which ran from 1999 to 2003. The subtitle of the MEDFOREX project centre was “Valuation, Assessment and Decision Support Tools for the Sustainable Management of Mediterranean Forests”. The main objectives of the Project Centre were to: set up standard protocols for valuation; find values related to several types of Mediterranean forest; test the transferability of those values; develop integrated decision making tools; incorporate equity considerations when evaluating; and disseminate the results among the scientific community and a variety of end-users. There were 36 members of the MEDFOREX consortium and it was coordinated by the Forest Technology Centre of Catalonia (CTFC), Solsona, Spain. In 2007 the EFIMED Regional Office was established through an agreement between EFI and the Spanish government <http://www.efimed.efi.int/portal/>. EFIMED has taken over from where the MEDFOREX Project Centre left off.
